Meet Ruby

Are you as glad as I am that the work week is finally over? It’s so annoying when my human chooses to be gone for most of the day instead of snuggling and playing with me at home! My name is Ruby, and I am honored to be the House Paws Pet of the Week.

I am a Cairn Terrier, and I’m 14 years old – but that doesn’t slow me down! Just ask Kit, my human. I’ve had lots of energy since the day she adopted me (I was one year old at the time), and I still love to go, go, go! I don’t play fetch quite as much as I used to, but I have a relentless curiosity. It’s one of my many charms.

My mom found me through Rescued Pets are Wonderful (RPAW) back in 2006, and we’ve been inseparable ever since. When I was younger, we’d play catch until she was exhausted, which doesn’t make sense now that I think about it, because I was the one doing all the running. She’d actually try to hide my favorite toys from me so that I would forget about playing catch! As if I could just suddenly forget about my favorite game. One thing that always annoyed me was how slow she was sometimes to throw the darn toy. I’d bring it back to her like a good dog, and even drop it right in her lap so she didn’t have to do any work. Mom would just sit there like she didn’t know what to do with the toy! I would nudge her or pick the toy up and drop it back in her lap to try to get her to throw it, but sometimes it took FOREVER. It’s like she was trying to get me to stop playing or something.

If you haven’t noticed from my pictures, I’m pretty cute. But please don’t try taking a picture of me if you meet me. I hate cameras! They make that awful flash of light, and it scares me. I rarely let my mom take pictures of me, which is why she doesn’t have very many. She has to sneak the camera out when I’m not looking, and I’m very attentive.

Another fun fact about me: I love to explore! It’s always awesome when Mom accidentally leaves the gate open, because then I can leave the yard and see some new things! Sometimes I can also sneak out if the front door is left open too long. But every time I get the chance to explore, some neighbor has to tattle on me. They call Mom, and she comes over to pick me up. On the bright side, I always manage to charm the neighbors with my cuteness, so they bring me into their house and give me treats while I wait for Mom to show up. I’m really a very friendly dog! Everyone loves me, and I like everybody!

I also love all kinds of food. I’m an adventurous soul, and I’ll try anything that smells interesting. Mom gets mad at me though when I try eating the stuff in the cat box. Apparently that’s off-limits. My love of food exposes me to all kinds of wonderful flavors, but it also gave me bad teeth. This Monday I had to have half of my teeth removed! I recovered like a champ for a 14-year-old and I’m back to my normal self already. My mouth feels a little weird without all my teeth, but at least all of the pain is gone! Dr. Ann did a pretty good job for a human. And I’m proud to represent all of the senior pets who need dentist appointments – we can handle it just as well as the younger riff-raff!
