Linda Lou here. I am refusing to believe that the dog days of summer are almost gone and it’s time for school to start again. Are you wondering why a dog is worrying about school starting? Well, as it turns out, there are many different kinds of school that the average dog can attend. I am not talking about those dogs with regular jobs that need consistent training classes, like police dogs, service dogs, search & rescue dogs. I am talking about classes for regular dogs like me and you.
Basic obedience classes are something that every pooch should attend. It just makes us good dogs. We learn how to sit, lay down, and come to our parents on command. We also learn how to walk on a leash without acting like a wild beast. We learn manners. No dog is too old to go to basic obedience classes.
Once you graduate from basic, you can go on to advanced obedience classes where you can learn things like walking next to your mom or dad OFF LEASH!!! How cool would that be??
There are also classes that teach you ways to exercise for fun. These classes are great for all of my canine peers who need to work to be happy (I’m talking to you, Shepherds, Terriers, Retrievers, Collies, Spaniels, and all of you herding & hunting breeds)! Now while exercise is not my cup of tea (I am kinda lazy, but I had knee surgery so that is my excuse), I will tell you about them anyway.
One type of exercise class is called agility. This is where the humans teach us to run through courses with obstacles set up. It is actually very fun to watch! Dock diving is pretty cool too. You learn how to race to the end of a dock and LEAP into the water after a toy! I would likely make it about 14 inches, if that. Another very active sport is flyball. Teams of dogs take turns racing back and forth between stations set up holding tennis balls. One dog runs down, grabs a ball and brings it to their human, and the next dog goes and it keeps going like that. The fastest team wins! There is a lot of excitement, barking and shouting. Fun!! My mom has even seen tiny dogs like me doing this… apparently they use teeny weenie tennis balls. 🙂
There are lots of other types of fun classes out there, just ask your parents to take a look on the Internet! My mom is planning on taking my sister Connie to one where she will learn how to hunt mice. Connie likes to hunt, but she is too small to go out in the field and get a goose.
So going back to school isn’t a bad thing at all! Have fun and see what classes you may be interested in!
